Description
The Church Hall, originally referred to as the 'Sunday School House' in a drawing from 1836, was built in the early 19th century with a later addition at the rear. It is constructed of granite rubble with granite ashlar quoins, door, and window-jambs, and features red-brick arches over the windows. The roof is made of corrugated iron, although it appears to have been slated in 1836. Each gable has a rendered brick chimneystack on the ridge, with a projecting brick course forming a band below the top of each stack. The building has a one-room plan with an added room at the rear and is a single storey high.
The symmetrical front has four windows and a gabled entrance porch in the center, which contains 20th-century double doors. The windows have slightly curved heads and feature 6-paned sashes with horns on the upper sashes. In the right-hand gable, there are two windows with slightly curved heads, containing 2-light wood casements that originally had 6 panes per light, although the center glazing bar has been removed from the four lowest panes. The interior has not been inspected but appears featureless when viewed through the windows.
In front of the hall, the garden is enclosed by iron railings with spear tops above a low granite wall, featuring double gates that closely resemble those in the 1836 drawing. Each upright of the railing has a diamond-shaped head, and the gates have similar uprights with a long arch-brace. In the right-hand front corner of the garden stands an old cast-iron gas lamp standard, which has been converted to electricity and is inscribed with "WILLEY & CO. LTD. EXETER."
