Description

Heathfield is an early 19th century house with former stables. It is built of colourwashed rendered stone rubble with a thatched roof, hipped at the ends. The house has a “L” shape, creating a rear courtyard defined by the former stable buildings. The main block is one room deep, two rooms wide, with principal rooms to either side of an entrance lobby containing the staircase. A projecting stack with a brick shaft is located at the left end, and another on the rear wall of the main block, at the junction with the rear wing. It is unclear which room or wing the rear lateral stack serves. A small gabled wing adjoins the left end of the main block and appears to be a later addition, slightly set back. A single-storey former stable block runs parallel to the house, returning to adjoin the service wing on the right, and a former coach house, now converted to a garage, is situated at the left. The house has two storeys. The front elevation is symmetrical with three bays, featuring a central 20th century half-glazed front door below a 12-pane sash window. There are 16-pane sashes to the ground and first floor on the left and right. A thatched verandah, supported by chamfered timber posts, returns around the left and right ends of the main block. The stable range is thatched and has 20th century windows and doors. The coach house, which previously had a thatched roof and a lunette window, now has a corrugated iron roof. The interior has not been inspected. The thatched verandah is a notable feature, visible from the road, and Heathfield is one of several 19th century houses along the Exeter Road.
