Description

Brimley Stile is an 18th-century house located in Chudleigh. It is constructed from whitewashed rendered stone rubble and features a thatched roof, gabled at the right end and hipped at the left end. The house has a right end stack and an axial stack at the left end. The layout consists of a single depth plan with two principal rooms, one on each side of a lobby entrance, and the rear of the stairs facing the front door. There is a small service room at the left end.

The accommodation has been extended into a former shippon at right angles to the main structure, linked by a 20th-century flat-roofed single-storey block. The rear elevation of the main range includes a shallow outshut and a small 20th-century projection. The house is two-storeys tall and has an asymmetrical three-window front. The thatch eaves are eyebrowed over three first-floor windows, and there is an approximately central plank and cover strip front door with a thatched porch supported by posts.

On the first floor, there are three small two-light casements with glazing bars, while the ground floor features a left-side one-light 20th-century window and two-light casements with two panes per light. The front elevation slightly curves forward at the right end. Inside, both principal rooms showcase chamfered cross beams, exposed joists, and fireplaces with stone jambs and timber lintels, with the left-hand fireplace lintel being chamfered and stopped. Brimley Stile is an attractive example of vernacular architecture in the region.
