Description

Lower Upcott is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of local grey limestone rubble, rendered and color-washed on the front elevation, with projecting end stacks and an asbestos slate roof, which was previously thatched. The building has a double depth rectangular plan, featuring two rooms wide with heated rooms at the front, likely on either side of a central passage. A stair is located in a rear turret, with service rooms on the left and right under catslide roofs. There is a 20th-century single-storey addition at the rear right, positioned at right angles to the main structure.

The farmhouse is two stories high and has a symmetrical five-window front with a central gable and a central half-glazed porch from the 20th century. The first-floor windows are 16-pane sashes without horns, while the ground floor features 12-pane sashes and a 2-light casement in the front gable. The rear elevation includes a two-storey gabled projection, likely the stair turret, with the rear wall aligned with the outshuts. Although the interior has not been inspected, it may contain interesting features, including a potentially good staircase.

The house is noted in White's Directory of 1879 as having been built "about 150 years ago" and is historically significant as the birthplace of the geographer Major James Rennell, who was born in 1742.
