Description

CHUDLEIGH SX 88 SE 1/23 Lower Upcott 23.8.55 II

Farmhouse. Circa early C18. Local grey limestone rubble, rendered and colourwashed to the front elevation; projecting end stacks; asbestos slate roof (described as "formerly thatched" in list description of 1952), gabled at ends. Double depth rectangular plan, 2 rooms wide with heated rooms at the front, probably on either side of a central passage with the stair in a rear turret and rear left and right service rooms under catslide roofs. C20 single storey addition or rebuilding at the rear right at right angles to the main range. 2-storeys. Symmetrical 5-window front with a central gable and a central half-glazed C20 porch. 16-pane sashes without horns to the first floor, 12-pane to the ground floor, 2-light casement in front gable. The rear elevation has a 2-storey gabled projection (probably stair turret), the rear wall flush with the rear walls of the outshuts. Interior not inspected, but features of interest may survive, including the possibility of a good staircase. The house is described in White's Directory of 1879 as having been built "about 150 years ago". It was the birthplace of the geographer Major James Rennell, born 1742.
