Description
This listing describes a pair of gate piers, gates, and a section of adjoining wall located approximately 14 meters south of the porch of the Parish Church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Bovey Tracey. The structures date from the mid-19th century, although the gate piers may be reused elements from the late 17th century or 18th century.
The granite gate piers stand about 1.8 meters high and are square in section, featuring swept tapering tops topped with ball finials. The gates are made of 19th-century iron and each consists of five full-height uprights and six short intermediate uprights, all adorned with diamond finials within an iron frame. The lower part of each gate includes a long arch-brace. Between the piers, there is a granite end step and a small threshold made of pitched stones.
The stone rubble boundary wall with coping is included for group value. Historical drawings from 1836 indicate that there were neither gateposts nor a wall at that time; instead, the site featured a stone lychgate, a stile, and a hedge.
