Description

The lychgate to the Church of St Andrews, along with a flight of steps to the south, consists of a red sandstone lychgate built in the 19th century and a flight of semi-circular steps from the 18th century. The lychgate features a tiled roof that is gabled at both ends, with stone end walls that widen at the top. Curved braces spring from corbels on the north and south ends of the walls, supporting the gabled roof adorned with ornamental tiles and crested ridge tiles. It has a pair of timber gates that are boarded below and have turned balusters above. The semi-circular steps leading up to the lychgate from the road provide an attractive approach to the church. A watercolour by Swete from 1796 depicts the semi-circular steps with gate-piers at the top, as noted in his work "Picturesque sketches of Devon".
