Description

The Borrington chest tomb, located about 5 meters southwest of the tower of the Church of St Mary, dates from the 16th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features an oversailing chamfered granite lid. The inscription on the tomb commemorates Humphry Borrington and describes the Borrington Charity, which was granted in 1589. According to the Ideford and Luton Guide, the tomb actually belongs to Humphry's father, Bartholomew, and the inscription was added later. The charity associated with the tomb was disbursed from it.
