Description
A terrace of five attached houses at 4-12 St Paul’s Road, Newton Abbot, built in the mid-19th century as part of the Courtenay Park development, which was laid out in 1854. The houses curve downhill to meet number 100 Queen Street. They are constructed of painted stucco with stone dressings, and have slate roofs with wide eaves and moulded stacks to the gable ends. Each house has a symmetrical three-window facade, arranged over two storeys and basements. Plain bands run along the eaves. The windows are 2/2-pane sash windows, with horizontal glazing bars, flanked by moulded pilasters. Bracketed sills and moulded sill string courses are present on the first floors. The front doors are double-depth plans, and are vertically panelled and set within semicircular-arched doorcases with keystones and fanlights. These doorcases are flanked by windows similar to those of the first floors, which have bracketed sills, raised surrounds and cornices on consoles. Number 4 has plain rendered stacks. Number 6 has a 20th-century eight-panel door, while number 8 has a 20th-century six-panel door and 20th-century windows to the ground floor. Number 10 has a 20th-century panelled door. The interior was not inspected.
