Description
The Retreat is a house built around 1840 to 1850, constructed from stuccoed brick that resembles stone, featuring rusticated quoins. It has a bituminized scantle slate roof with a gabled end and deep bracketed eaves, along with brick chimney stacks at the gable ends. The building has a double depth plan, consisting of two main front rooms, a central entrance hall, and likely some rear service rooms.
The exterior is two storeys high with an attic and presents a symmetrical three-bay front. It retains original windows, which include 16-pane sashes and a narrower 12-pane sash in the central first floor, all with stone sills. The central doorway features a rectangular overlight, a 19th-century panelled door, and a late 19th or early 20th-century glazed wooden porch with shaped bargeboards and a finial in the gable. The attic windows are notable for their two small bullseyes with radial glazing bars at each gable end, which is an unusual feature. The rear elevation may still have original openings. The interior has not been inspected but likely includes 19th-century joinery, including the staircase.
