Description
Farrants Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the early 18th century, although it remodels an earlier house and was refenestrated in the 19th century. The building features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and has a slate roof, which was formerly thatched. The roof is gabled at both ends and has projecting end stacks with brick shafts. The layout is uncertain, but it appears to consist of three front rooms, with the central room possibly being a wide hall, while the flanking rooms are heated from gable end stacks. At the rear, there are two smaller unheated service rooms in an integral outshut, with a stairwell located in the center. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical five-window front with regular fenestration of 2-light 19th-century casements, each with six panes per light; there are five on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The 19th-century front door is positioned to the right, sheltered by a long slate pentice supported by rustic wooden posts, which rises to form a timber gable in the center. At the rear, there is a slightly raised raking roof, possibly above the staircase, which features a single 4-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window. The interior has not been thoroughly inspected, but the central ground floor room includes a chamfered unstopped cross beam, and the fireplaces are said to have 20th-century grates. An outbuilding to the rear right creates a narrow rear courtyard with a parallel wall. To the southwest, there is a tall cob garden wall on stone rubble footings, capped with corrugated iron and tiles, which has a doorway leading to the farmyard and the nearby circa 16th-century barn.
