Description
Whitpot Mill is a water mill, likely built in the early 19th century with later 19th-century alterations. It is constructed from local limestone rubble and rendered, featuring a scantle slate roof with gabled ends. The building is square in shape, with the waterwheel and pit located on the north side and an entrance at lower ground level on the east side. The mill has three storeys. The east front includes a 19th-century boarded door on the left and a fixed three-light window to the left, which has overlapping panes of glass. On the south side, there is a loading door on the first floor and a small window in the gable on the second floor. Additionally, a single-storey shed with a cast entrance is present on the south side. The north side features a cast-iron overshot waterwheel, although its baskets have been removed. The north elevation has two single-light windows on the second floor and two two-light casements on the first floor, all with glazing bars.
Inside, the ground floor retains some of the heavy wooden frame for the machinery along with iron gearing, but most of the machinery has been removed. The second storey contains a complete set of wooden boarded grain bins and a wooden sash hoist and tackle. Composite millstones are lying nearby outside. Historical records indicate that the mill was held by William Bennett in 1566, and in 1756, Judith Gelsius bequeathed it to Susanna Bealy of Abbotskerswell. According to Whites Directory of 1878, William Lee was the miller, and the mill was closed around 1919. This information has been provided by the present owner.
