Description

Numbers 1-8 and 8B form a terrace of eight houses situated on a sloping hillside, built in the mid-19th century as part of a development for the Courtenay family, designed by J.W. Rowell. The houses are constructed of painted stucco with slate roofs, featuring rendered stacks at the party walls and ends. The design incorporates molded architectural details, particularly visible on numbers 3, 4, and 8.

Each house is two storeys high and has a double-depth plan with rear wings. The front is characterized by a 2-window range, with wide eaves, molded architraves, brackets supporting the first-floor windows, and a first-floor sill band. The windows are predominantly 2/2-pane sashes with horizontal glazing bars and horns, with tripartite windows on the ground floors. Each house has a door to the left, with a narrow overlight above. Number 8 has raised window surrounds, two windows to the gabled return facing number 8B, and an oculus in the attic. Original 2-vertical-panelled doors are found at numbers 1, 2, and 5; number 7 has a late 19th-century four-panel door, while the others have 20th-century replacements. The rear of the properties feature small-paned casement windows. The interiors have not been inspected.

The front gardens are enclosed by Devon stone piers with painted rendered caps, and thick party garden walls with rounded capping.
