Description
DODDISCOMBSLEIGH APRIDGE LANE SX 88 NE 3/121 Apridge Farmhouse II Farmhouse. Circa early C17. Whitewashed rendered cob and stone;thatched roof, hipped at left end, half-hipped at right end, hipped end to wing ; left end stack with rendered shaft, back to back fireplaces in stack with granite shaft between wing and main range. Plan: L plan, the main range single depth, 2 rooms wide, both rooms heated ; rear right kitchen wing at right angles to main range with fireplace back to back with right hand room ; stair in projection in rear left angle between main range and wing; lean-to adjoining inner wall of rear wing. The position of the original entrance is unclear : there is an entrance on the front at the right which is said formerly to have led into a very narrow passage-like dairy, entrance into wing on right return. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front with 2 buttresses on the front : plank and stud door at right end. Fenestration of C20 timber casements with glazing bars. The right return of the main block has a C17 4-light mullioned window on the ground floor and 1 small first floor window. The right return continues (the wing) with the eaves thatch eyebrowed over 1 first floor 2-light casement ; 2 similar casements to right of C20 porch into wing. Interior: Chamfered crossbeam and exposed joists to kitchen wing which is divided between the kitchen and a narrow rear service room. Open fireplace with granite jambs chamfered lintel and bread oven. The right hand room of the main block has a fireplace back to back with the kitchen fireplace, with granite jambs and a chamfered step-stopped lintel. The left hand room has a chamfered step-stopped half-beam at the left end, C20 fireplace possibly concealing earlier features: 2-light chamfered mullioned stair window, now internal. Roof: Apex not inspected at time of survey (1987) but 3 jointed cruck side-pegged trusses survive over the main block : principal rafters over the wing are straight.
