Description

The Underhill chest tomb, headstone, and low railings are located about 11 meters south of the chancel of the Church of St John the Baptist in Bishopsteignton. This structure dates from the late 19th century and features a marble chest and headstone, along with iron railings. The chest is coped and topped with a triangular-headed headstone that has a finial. The inscription commemorates Joseph Underhill, who died in 1887. The low railings are designed with barleysugar twists and are supported by ornamental corner standards that include foliage spandrels.
