Description
The ruins of a chapel located northeast of the parish church in Bishopsteignton date back to the medieval period. The structure is made of stone rubble and features walls with some pudlock holes. It is roofless and situated partly within a 20th-century Garden of Rest. Notable remains include angle buttresses at the southwest and northeast corners, a straight joint with the northeast churchyard wall, and a buttress on the south side, which help to indicate the original dimensions of the building. This chapel is believed to have been a sanctuary chapel founded around 1350 and dedicated to St John the Evangelist, but it fell into disuse in the 16th century.
