Description
Hestow Barton is a farmhouse, likely built in the early 18th century, with some internal refurbishment from the 20th century. The structure is made of rendered stone rubble and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends, with end stacks and an additional stack on the left end for the outshut. The layout consists of two main heated rooms on either side of a central passage that contains the stair, which is separated from the passage. The passage continues to the rear, leading to service rooms in an integral outshut with a catslide roof, with the kitchen located at the rear left. There is also a 20th-century lean-to on the rear right.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-bay front. It includes a late 19th-century porch with a parapet, a 20th-century front door with a rectangular fanlight, and 2-light casement windows with six panes per light throughout. The three first-floor windows have timber lintels, while the ground-floor windows feature slightly cambered heads. The left end wall has a semi-circular, projecting slate-roofed bread oven attached to the outshut.
Inside, the original plan remains intact, featuring a nearly complete set of panelled doors from around 1700, including those leading off the first-floor landing. There is a flight of stairs leading to the attic rooms, which were likely used as servants' accommodation. The roof has pegged collar rafter trusses that are neatly notched and halved at the apex, with additional 20th-century collars for extra support. Hestow Barton is an interesting and somewhat unusual example of an early 18th-century farmhouse in the region, showcasing the traditional through passage design combined with the stair and first-floor landing.
