Description

A terrace of five cottages, likely dating from the early 19th century, and possibly representing a remodelling of an earlier building. The cottages are constructed of rendered stone rubble with a slate roof, the left-hand end over number 40 being at a lower level. Red brick stacks are located at the right-hand gable end, to the left of the centre, and projecting from the rear.

The layout consists of five cottages, each originally with a single room, with three stories each except for number 40 at the left end, which is two stories. Heating stacks are positioned at the rear for numbers 40, 44, and 46, an axial stack is present at number 42, and a gable stack at number 48. The terrace may be a remodelling and raising of an earlier structure.

The exterior presents a two-story, one-window frontage on the left, and a three-story, four-window frontage to the right. Early 19th century, two-light, 16-pane casement windows are largely present, although three second-floor windows to the right are later replacements, and the left-hand ground floor window is a 19th-century three-light casement. Numbers 44, 46, and 48 have early 19th-century doors with beaded flush lower panels and glazing above, while numbers 40 and 42 have similar 20th-century glazed doors. The rear elevation displays projecting lateral stacks.

The ground floor of number 42 was inspected, but no original features were visible.
