Description

Vine House, believed to have been the local poor house, was built in 1764. The house is constructed from local slate rubble and metamorphic stone rubble, with brick window arches. It has a scantle slate roof, gabled at the ends and hipped at one corner, with some early, crested ridge tiles. The gable ends have rendered chimney stacks.

The building originally had an L-shaped layout, potentially comprising two houses. The south wing may have been a two-room plan with a central entrance, while the north-east wing was likely another two-room house with a central entrance and a later outshut at the rear.

The south front has a regular two-window arrangement, with late 19th or early 20th-century two-light casement windows in original openings, each with a segmental brick arch and keystone. A late 19th-century glazed porch with corner shafts and elaborate timber cresting, resembling fleur-de-lis, sits centrally. A round stone plaque with the date 1764 in a red brick surround is positioned at the centre of the first storey. Two flat-roofed dormers are present.

The north-east return has a regular four-window range, with the windows more closely spaced on the right. Similar casement windows are found here, with horizontal glazing bars on the first floor, again set within segmental brick arches with keystones. A doorway with a rusticated rendered surround and keyblock leads to a late 19th-century glazed and panelled door.

Internally, some ground floor partitions have been removed. The roof, likely original, features collars nailed to the faces of the principal rafters.
