Description

Virginia Cottage is a small house dating from around the 1840s to 1850s, likely remodelling an earlier dwelling. The exterior is constructed primarily from local slate rubble, with red brick window dressings. The left and rear walls are rendered, while the right-hand end wall is slate hung. Prominent gable-end chimney stacks with set-offs are visible, with the substantial right-hand stack being slate hung and potentially incorporating elements of a demolished adjacent building's chimney. The house features a moulded cast iron gutter with decorative lion masks at the joints.

The house appears to have a double-depth plan, with two main front rooms and a central entrance stair hall, likely accompanied by smaller service rooms to the rear. The front elevation presents a symmetrical three-window façade. All original window openings retain red brick cambered arches, jambs, and slate sills. Original 16-pane sashes remain, containing their original crown glass. A narrower, original 8-pane sash serves as the stair window on the first floor. The central doorway has a 20th-century slate rubble porch with a lean-to slate roof. 20th-century casement windows are located at the rear of the property. The interior has not been inspected but may contain 19th-century features.
