Description

No. 51 Butterwalk is a late 16th century or early 17th century merchant's house of the "deux corps de batiments" type, which has undergone significant alterations. In the late 19th century, the former kitchen block and small court were incorporated into the main house, and the ground floor was converted for use as a shop. During the 19th century, the house was also used as a brush factory, while the range at the rear served as a candle factory. The building was refronted in the mid-19th century and stands at 3½ storeys tall, featuring a Welsh slate roof with ornamental cresting and a half-hipped gable facing the street. The front is timber-framed and slate-hung, with a jettied attic and a moulded bargeboard adorned with pineapple drops at the eaves. The first floor has five bays with pilasters between the window bays that support a fascia. The ground floor has a loggia over the pavement, supported by granite Tuscan columns. The second floor and attic feature architraved sash windows. The ground floor has a modern shopfront. The masonry party walls include one on the west side that faces a former open passage to No. 53, retaining a blocked two-light window with moulded reveals, a mullion, and wrought iron stay bars. Inside, there is a first-floor room with remnants of an original square-headed fireplace with a moulded surround and a relieving arch above, as well as part of an Elizabethan decorated plaster ceiling with ribwork.
