Description
The shippen, located approximately 10 metres northwest of West Pitten Farmhouse, is now used as a dairy and dates from the 16th or 17th century. It features a slate roof with granite quoins and a corrugated iron roof with a gabled end. The building is two storeys high, with animal stalls on the ground floor; two of these stalls have large wooden lintels, while the other two have concrete lintels. At the rear, there is possibly a reused round-arched granite doorway with a stopped chamfer. The loft includes a 20th-century door through the eaves and a small ventilation slit with granite jambs and a lintel. The front of the shippen faces the farmyard. The original farmhouse was destroyed by fire, and this shippen is part of a range of contemporary farm buildings that surround the yard, with the existing farmhouse on the fourth side built in the late 19th or early 20th century, near the site of the original house.
