Description
Townstal Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a guesthouse. It has a core that dates back to the 17th century or earlier, but it has undergone significant alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, including extensions added in the 20th century. The building is constructed of painted stone rubble, with stone rubble end and rear lateral stacks that feature chimney shafts topped with plastered brick. The roof is covered with asbestos slate, although it was likely thatched originally.
The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a main block with a three-room-and-through-passage layout. A former service wing extends forward at a right angle from the left end of the inner room, and there is an integral outshut at the rear right.
The exterior is two storeys high and features a regular four-window front that dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. The front doorway, located slightly to the right of centre, has a top-glazed six-panel door set behind a gabled stone porch with a round-headed outer arch. The flanking windows have low segmental brick arches over pairs of 12-pane sashes, with a 16-pane sash to the left. The first floor contains 12-pane sashes. The gable-ended roof has plain eaves. The gabled front block includes a 20th-century door in an older frame, which is sheltered by a 20th-century hood, next to the main block. The windows in this section are casements with glazing bars, except for the two 12-pane sashes in the outer side wall. There are also rear extensions from the 20th century.
Inside, the farmhouse has been much altered, and no early carpentry is visible. The fireplaces have been exposed and repaired, with the most complete examples found in the two right-hand rooms, both of which feature side ovens. The roof has not been inspected.
