Description
Farmhouse. Believed to date from the 17th century or earlier, with a 20th-century extension. The farmhouse is constructed of roughcast stone rubble, with an asbestos slate roof. The right-hand end of the roof is hipped, featuring a large rendered stack with weathering and a tapered cap. Originally, the house was likely larger, and now comprises a two-room main range with a further single-room wing behind the right-hand room, raised to two storeys in the 20th century. A 20th-century outshut is located behind the left-hand room. A small two-storey wing is at the front left, possibly a former porch or stair turret, while a shallow projection on the right-hand side is likely a stair turret. The existing stairs are positioned at the rear, between the two main rooms. The ground slopes steeply at the left end and rises at the right end.
The south front is asymmetrical with three windows, all with 20th-century casements, and a 20th-century wide French window to the right of centre. A glazed conservatory fills the space between the two front projections. A substantial projection with a slated roof adjacent to the left-hand stack likely served as a smoking chamber. At the rear (north) a wing to the left has been raised to two storeys with a flat roof, and a 20th-century single-storey outshut sits to the right.
The left-hand room features a chamfered cross-beam with bar stops, and a gable-end fireplace with a chamfered, cambered wooden lintel – any original stops on this lintel are buried. Other cross-beams are reported to have been replaced, and the first floor and roof structure were not inspected. It is noted that the roof timbers are said to have been replaced.
Behind the house, a cattle shed was originally a house with a lateral stack and chamfered plinth; it might have been a separate house or part of the original farmhouse. Historical records suggest the presence of remains of an old Manor House at Colehanger.
