Description
This is a small house in Dartmouth, likely the rear portion of a merchant’s house dating to the first half of the 17th century. It has undergone modernisation in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house’s construction is varied, with a stone rubble southern party wall, other walls being plastered timber framing or slate hung, and brick chimney shafts. The roof is slate. Originally, it formed part of a larger 17th-century house with a gallery and front block, which are now separated and form the property at No. 1 Lower Street. The house is three stories with attics and has a two-window front. The front and exposed side walls are plastered and feature slate-hung gable ends, with 1980s uPVC windows. The ground-floor doorway has a 20th-century part-glazed door and a display window beside it, serving the adjacent shop. The interior reflects the 19th and 20th-century alterations, with no surviving early carpentry or joinery, and blocked fireplaces with later grates. The roof was not inspected.
