Description
Hernaford Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1830 to 1840. It is constructed of slate rubble with a stuccoed front and a slate hung south side. The roof is a single span with gabled ends and deep eaves featuring paired brackets to the soffit, and incorporates some reused early crested ridge tiles from a previous building. Chimney stacks are located in the gable ends.
The plan is a double depth, almost square shape, with a central entrance hall/passage at the back containing the staircase and principal rooms on either side at the front. A kitchen, dairy and servants’ staircase are situated at the rear.
The symmetrical east front has three bays, with 16-pane sashes to the first floor and 8-over-12-pane sashes on the ground floor. The central doorway has panelled reveals and an original panelled door, now with a later porch featuring octagonal timber posts supporting a slated canopy. A tall, round-headed stair window with a sash and radiating glazing bars at the top is located at the rear.
Inside, the staircase features a wreathed mahogany handrail and stick balusters. The front room on the south side has a marble fireplace. All original internal joinery remains intact, including moulded doorframes, panelled doors and shutters, as well as moulded ceiling cornices.
The farmhouse likely replaced an earlier one, which is probably the more ancient house now known as Hernaford Cottage.
