Description
The quay on the River Dart, located about 1000 metres north-north-east of Dartington Hall, is part of the Dartington Hall estate and likely dates from the 18th century or earlier. It is constructed of limestone rubble with roughly dressed limestone quoins, and the outer side facing the river is made of larger rubble. The quay is rectangular in shape, measuring approximately 3 to 4 metres wide, with slightly battered walls and grass growing on top. It is positioned at an oblique angle to the river, forming a small harbour on the downstream side, which is now silted and supports the growth of large trees. The south side of the harbour basin features remnants of a stone rubble revetment. Historically, the first bridge at Totnes was built around 1200, and a weir was constructed in the late 16th century, both located downstream of the quay and likely impacting navigation to the sea. The quay at Dartington would have been necessary to facilitate navigation in the upper reaches of the river. Additionally, there are remains of another small jetty located about 400 metres due west.
