Description
A pair of attached houses built in 1938 by Robert Hening for Dartington Hall, and constructed by Staverton Builders. The houses are built of whitewashed brick with flat roofs and are designed in the International Modern Style. The plan is symmetrical for each house, with kitchens and entrance halls at the front, incorporating integrated porches in the front corners. A large living room is at the rear, and the bedrooms above feature a balcony. A pair of flat-roof garages are positioned at lower ground level in the centre of the front facade. The exterior has a symmetrical 1:2:1 window front with closely-spaced central first-floor window bands and smaller windows towards either end. A wide recessed window is centrally positioned on the ground floor, flanked by kitchen doorways and integral windows with small windows near the corners. The corners are cut away to form porches, supported by steel posts. Ground floor glazed doors and metal framed windows are present, without glazing bars, and wide window bands are seen at the corners. The interior may retain simple original features similar to those found in No 3. Numbers 8 and 9 were entirely designed by Hening and represent the last of the houses in Warren Lane to be built by Lescaze and Hening.
