Description
Nos 5, 6, and 7 Warren Lane are a row of attached houses built in 1935 by W E Lescaze of Howe and Lescaze from America, with assistance from R Hening. They were constructed by Staverton Builders for Dartington Hall. The houses feature whitewashed rendered brick walls and flat roofs.
The plan consists of three attached houses, with Nos 5 and 7 being mirror images of each other. Both have kitchens at the front, entrance halls at the sides, and living rooms at the back. The centre house, No 6, is similar but has its living room behind the kitchen and a stair hall, with the entrance hall accessed through a front doorway rather than the side. Each house includes an integral store shed at the front, although the shed for No 5 has been incorporated into an enlarged kitchen.
In terms of style, the houses represent the International Modern Style. The exterior is two storeys high, originally featuring a symmetrical arrangement of windows with a 1:3:1 pattern. The first floor has three bands of windows, wider in the centre and flanked by smaller stair windows on either side. The ground floor has a central doorway with sidelights and a concrete canopy, with an additional doorway and window to the right behind an area wall, and an area path to the left. The ground floor also features flat roof canopies. The doors are glazed, and the windows have metal frames without glazing bars.
The interior may contain simple original features similar to those found in No 3. Nos 5, 6, and 7 are the second group of houses built in Warren Lane by Lescaze and Hening.
