Description
A pair of attached houses built in 1934 by W.E. Lescaze, an American architect, assisted by R. Hening. The houses were constructed for Dartington Hall by Staverton Builders. They are built of whitewashed rendered brick with flat roofs. The plan is symmetrical, with each house mirroring the other and incorporating kitchens at the front centre, entrance halls to the sides, staircases in the front corners, and living and dining rooms at the rear. The design is in the International Modern Style.
Externally, the houses are two storeys and feature a symmetrical 2:2:2 window arrangement. There are bands of five-light metal frame casement windows, accentuated by a square window on the first floor, with smaller square windows above and below. Simple kitchen doorways are situated either side of the central windows, with a narrow pantry window to the side. All windows are metal-framed without glazing bars, and glazed doors are present. Flat canopies cover the main doorways. A front area wall features an integral outhouse at its centre.
The interior of No. 3 includes fireplaces with simple tiled surrounds in the dining and living rooms, as well as metal skirting boards. Original kitchen cupboards and a sink remain. It is likely that No. 4 also retains original features. Nos 3 and 4 were the first houses to be built in the Warren Lane development, which was designed by Lescaze and Hening.
