Description

Woodbury Farmhouse is a 17th-century or earlier farmhouse, with alterations and remodeling in the 18th and 19th centuries. The front is rendered in cob, with the higher left-hand end slate hung; the rear wing is of painted slate rubble. The roof is slate-covered, with gabled ends, and the left-hand end has been raised. Brick shafts and slate-on-edge pots top the gable and axial stacks.

The original layout was a 3-room plan with a through passage facing south, the lower end being to the right. The hall has an axial stack at its lower end, backing onto the passage, and a stair turret at the back. The lower right-hand room has a gable-end stack. The room at the left end may be an 18th-century parlour addition or enlargement of a smaller room, potentially originating from a medieval hall house. Further alterations occurred around the late 19th century, including the insertion of a straight staircase into the stair turret behind the hall and another staircase at the back of the lower end room, providing access to a garret. A single-story kitchen wing was also added behind the lower end, likely at the same time the inner room/parlour became a dairy. In the early 20th century, the roof of the left end was raised to create a larger chamber over the parlour.

The south-facing front has an asymmetrical appearance, with a 4-window arrangement. The first floor has three 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars, and a small 12-pane casement to the right. The ground floor hall has a large 4-light 19th-century casement with glazing bars, and to the right, a 3-light 19th-century casement. A late 19th-century panelled and glazed door is located between these windows, replacing the original passage front doorway. The higher left-hand end is slate hung, and has higher eaves.

The rear elevation has various 19th and 20th-century sash and casement windows with glazing bars. A single-story kitchen wing on the left has a slate gable-ended roof and a projecting stack at the gable end with ovens at the base. The inner right-hand side of the wing features a 19th-century 2-light casement with glazing bars, and a 19th-century panelled door.

Inside, the cross beams in the hall are plastered over. A beam remains at the lower end of the hall, over the fireplace, supported by a timber corbel or joist end – possibly a remnant of an internal jetty where a stack has been inserted. The parlour has a good late 18th-century chimneypiece and a glazed china cupboard. The lower right-hand end room, which was not inspected, is said to contain a Victorian chimneypiece. The Victorian staircase in the rear stair turret has turned balusters. Surviving 18th-century joinery includes 18th-century fielded panel doors and 18th-century 2-panel doors on the first floor.

Only the roof structure over the lower right end was inspected, revealing straight principal rafters with lapped and pegged collars.
