Description
New Bridge with steps to footpath is a road bridge over the River Avon, built in the late 18th century or early 19th century as part of a turnpike route, replacing an earlier road over Newmill Bridge. It is constructed from squared coursed slate stone and features a large single segmental span with flush voussoirs beneath a continuous string course. The parapets are squared and include a series of vertical 'through stones' at regular intervals.
At each end of the arch and on both faces, there are shallow square buttresses that extend through, with the abutments slightly flared out. The east end has abutments that extend for approximately 14 meters to a flight of stone stairs on each side, leading to a landing and a stone stile slab at the top. The abutment wall on the south side includes two large added raking buttresses that reach the height of the string course. The total length of the bridge parapets is about 53 meters, and the roadway is approximately 4 meters wide.
