Description

Priory Gate House is a late 16th century merchant's house that was refaced in the early 19th century. It stands on the site of a former priory gatehouse, as indicated by a plaque. The building incorporates the masonry party walls of the earlier 16th century structure, featuring a moulded corbel from the former first-floor jetty. It has three storeys and two windows, topped by a hipped Welsh slate roof with a coved eaves cornice. The front is timber-framed and slate-hung, with flush-framed sash windows that have exposed boxing and glazing bars. A modern shopfront has been added.

The rear facade retains an original seven-light mullioned window on the ground floor, complete with ovolo mouldings, as well as a doorway with similar mouldings. Inside, the back ground floor room, which was once a parlour, features an Elizabethan plaster ceiling with decorated rib work and moulded ceiling beams, along with earlier 17th century panelling. A mid-18th century open staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and square newels leads to the upper floors. Part of the first-floor gallery at the rear survives, although it has been rebuilt as a closet with a two-light mullioned window that includes ovolo mouldings and stay bars. The muntin and plank partition and internal half-timbering show traces of painted decoration. The first-floor back room, formerly the hall, contains an early 17th century chimney piece with bolection moulding. The building is listed as Grade II* for its significant interior features.
