Description

Sparkwell Bridge is a road bridge over a railway cutting, built around 1848. It is constructed from coursed stone rubble and features a wide segmental arch made of granite ashlar voussoirs, with a stringcourse and granite coping along the parapet. The South Devon Railway, which was authorized in 1844, opened this section from Totnes to Laira (Plymouth) in 1848. The South Devon Company was dissolved in 1878, but the Great Western Railway took over two years earlier in 1876. The broad gauge was replaced in 1892.
