Description
Higher Lodge, including gatepiers, gates, and railings, is a pair of gate lodges to Maristow Park, built around 1839 by Charles Fowler for Sir Ralph Lopes. The lodges are constructed from granite ashlar and feature slate pyramidal roofs with ball finials. They are square in plan and two storeys high. The ground floor is rusticated and has very large keyblocks above the window arches. The first floor includes large corner pilasters, dentils along the stone eaves cornice, and small tripartite round-headed windows with diamond panes. Each lodge has a large granite porch supported by massive pilasters and an entablature, along with small plain rendered chimneystacks at the front corners. There are single-storey wings on the outer sides. The property also includes plain granite gatepiers at the carriageway entrance, with iron gates, and flanking railings that connect the gatepiers to the lodges.
