Description

Bay House is a house dating from around the early 19th century, with later additions. It is constructed of local slate rubble, with a stuccoed front that has been finished with a roughcast texture. The roof is slate, with deep eaves and side stacks, the shafts of which are also roughcast. The house is situated at a right angle to the road and has a double-depth rectangular plan, with two principal rooms at the front and a central entrance hall between. The rear rooms are likely shallower service rooms, and there is a doorway from the road into the back of the left-hand side. A one-bay, two-storey addition, set back slightly on the right-hand end, exists of uncertain date.

The front of the house is symmetrical, with three windows. It has two storeys and an attic. The ground floor has C19 12-pane sash windows with slate sills. A central doorway features a circa mid-19th century panelled and glazed door. The right-hand side has a two-storey, flat-roof addition with a panelled door and a 12-pane sash window above. The left-hand side of the elevation facing the street also has two C19 12-pane sash windows on each floor; the ground floor to the left features panelled shutters, and to the left of that is a doorway with a 20th-century plank door. A large, slate-hung, hipped roof dormer is visible at the front.

Adjoining the left-hand end of the front of the house is a 19th-century front garden wall, built of slate rubble and topped with ornate cast-iron cresting. The interior was not inspected. The group value of this building lies in its contribution to the streetscape of Stoke Fleming.
