Description
Lower Yeatson is a farmhouse dated 1833, constructed from local stone rubble with red brick window dressings. It features a scantle slate roof with gabled ends and deep eaves at the front, along with brick stacks over the gable ends. The building has a double depth plan, consisting of two principal front rooms and a narrow entrance hall at the center that leads to the stairs at the back. The service rooms are located behind the principal rooms.
The exterior is two storeys with an attic and presents a symmetrical three-bay front. It retains original 16-pane sashes with flat red brick arches and jambs, along with stone sills. The central doorway features a 19th-century glazed and panelled door in a moulded frame, accompanied by a 20th-century glazed porch set on a flight of slate steps. At the rear, there is an original central round-headed stair window, which is a sash with radial glazing bars in the head, and original three-light casement windows with glazing bars. The left gable end includes a round attic window with radiating glazing bars.
The interior was only partially inspected, focusing on the hall, which has a deeply moulded ceiling cornice and six-panel doors. The staircase at the back is adorned with stick balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail. Above the stair window, there is a moulded plaster panel inscribed with "Thomas Edmonds 1833." According to Kelly's Directory of 1856, Thomas Hunt Edmonds, a solicitor from Fore Street, Totnes, is noted to have built Lower Yeatson while upgrading Yeatson House for his own use.
