Description
Butterwell, located approximately 40 metres south-southwest of Ashwell, dates from the early 19th century. It is constructed of slate rubble and features a slate roof. The building is rectangular in shape with an open front and a monopitch roof made of large slates. The door is missing, and inside, there is a slate shaft. In front of the butterwell, there is a slate 'threshold'. The structure is gradually being pushed over by a large oak tree that is growing behind it.
