Description
No. 44 High Street is a former gas company office building constructed between 1934 and 1935 by architect Allen T. Hussell for the Ilfracombe Gas Company. The building features red brick with Portland stone dressings and occupies a corner site. It has an entrance foyer and showrooms facing High Street, with a range of offices located behind that face Northfield Road.
The architectural style combines Neo-Georgian and Moderne elements. The exterior is two storeys high, with a Neo-Georgian front block that has recessed corners and a one-bay front and right-hand return elevation. The ground floor is tall and made of stone, featuring large windows and a corner doorway adorned with a moulded architrave, a cartouche, and arms above with an inscription. The first floor has tall windows in moulded architraves with cornices, and there are stringcourses, recessed corners, and a stone cornice and blocking course above. The windows are framed in metal.
At the rear, facing Northfield Road, there is a lower two-storey and basement range designed in the Moderne style, with a recessed first floor. The end bays project and include corner windows, with a rounded corner on the left. Smaller windows on the left and right have balconnettes.
Inside, the showroom and foyer feature a moulded circular ceiling with glazed light fittings, and a corridor with stepped moulded architraves leads to a polished stone staircase with a solid balustrade. The boardroom on the first floor has banded rustication and corner piers, illuminated by a ceiling lantern. The ground floor office includes a polished stone chimneypiece, and there is a back staircase with an iron balustrade.
