Description
The Chapple chest tomb, Huxtable headstone, and two accompanying gravestones are located about 2 metres south-west of the south porch of the Church of St Peter in West Buckland. This group of memorials dates from the mid-19th century. The chest tomb, created by T Britton, features a slate slab resting on a brick plinth. The chest tomb has deeply incised borders and decoration at the head of the slate slab, which bears the verse: "Behold He taketh away/who can hinder him/who will say unto him what doest thou?" This memorial is dedicated to members of the Chapple family. The slate headstone has incised decorative borders and commemorates "the last of the Huxtables of Leary... Landowners of Parts of Leary before the Days of Oliver Cromwell." The two accompanying stones to the south also bear verses, with the left stone featuring a nowy arched design.
