Description

Castle Lodge, including a sundial, is a lodge located at the entrance to the park in front of Castle Mound, likely built in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of squared stone rubble and features a low pyramidal roof covered with slate. At the apex of the roof is a chimney topped with crenellations. This small square building is designed to resemble a mock castle, complete with disproportionately large round turrets at each corner.

The lodge is a single storey and has a front with two large square-headed windows that have chamfered surrounds and hoodmoulds. These windows contain 2-light mullioned and transomed wood casements, which are likely not the original windows. The left side wall, which faces the park gates, also has two similar windows, but these feature original wood glazing with chamfered mullions and transoms, and the upper lights have flattened, trefoiled arches. There is one window in the rear wall with a wood casement similar to those at the front, but it lacks a hoodmould. The right side wall is obscured by a 20th-century concrete block addition.

In the angle turret to the left, there is a doorway with a chamfered surround and hoodmould, leading to a curved plank door adorned with ornate strap-hinges. The other three turrets have exaggeratedly tall slits, with the two turrets closest to the doorway featuring loops at the top and bottom. All four fronts and the turrets are finished with a moulded string course and a crenellated parapet.

In front of the building, there is a large sundial made from a single piece of slate, although the center is missing. The sundial is incised with the name "BARNSTAPLE."
