Description

The building consists of workshop ranges, including a smithy, likely built in the mid-19th century, with some alterations made in the mid-20th century. It is constructed from uncoursed stone rubble with some red-brick details and features gable-ended and hipped scantle-slate roofs. The layout is asymmetrical in a U-shape, with a long range attached to the rear of the left side of Thorne House, and two shorter ranges extending at right angles to the south and west, forming the U-plan. The smithy is located in the short returning range. The long east range has been converted for domestic use in the mid to late 20th century.

The building is two storeys high. The smithy has a boarded loft door with a segmental brick head and a ground-floor two-leaf boarded door also with a segmental brick head. The south range features a small-pane loft window to the right and a large ground-floor boarded door. The main east range has been refenestrated in the mid to late 20th century, now featuring 20th-century two-light wooden casements and an off-centre gabled loft dormer. Inside, the south-east range retains a complete working blacksmith's shop, which includes a painted brick forge, working bellows in a metal frame with a long handle, a bench with a tool rack, and a cobbled floor. It is noted that this space was formerly a wheelwright's shop.
