Description

This is a group of five chest tombs and headstones located approximately 21 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of All Saints. They date from the mid to late 18th century and early 19th century and are made of sandstone.

One headstone, situated about 19 metres south of the aisle, features a scrolled top with carved winged cherubs' heads and is inscribed to Thomas Bright. Another headstone, also about 19 metres south of the aisle, has a moulded raised oval panel with carved winged cherubs' heads in the spandrels and a scrolled top with a cherub's head at the centre. The inscription on this headstone was illegible at the time of survey in October 1987.

A chest tomb, dated 1800 and approximately 21 metres south of the aisle, has a coved cornice and a flat top, with an inscription to William Bright, who died on 2nd December 1800. There is also a pair of back-to-back headstones located about 24 metres south of the aisle. The larger headstone to the west has a shaped head with a shallow carved winged cherub's head and is inscribed to a member of the Bright family. The smaller nouy-headed headstone to the west is well carved, featuring a central crown flanked by putti, each holding a wreath in one hand and a palm frond in the other. The fronds flank an inscription that was also illegible at the time of the survey.
