Description
The Pines is a former farmhouse, now a private hotel, dating to around 1840. It is constructed of painted stone and cob, with a slate roof featuring moulded wooden eaves and bargeboards, and rendered stacks over the gable ends. The building’s design is symmetrical, based on a double-fronted central hall and staircase plan, with a twin gable-ended rear service wing and a former granary now incorporated into the dwelling attached at the left gable end. It is two storeys high, with a three-window front. The windows are predominantly 16-paned hornless sashes, with a 12-paned sash above replaced 20th-century 2-light casements (2 panes per light) on either side. Horizontal sliding louvred timber shutters are present. A porch canopy, supported by slender Tuscan-style timber columns and pilasters and featuring an entablature, shelters a semi-circular arched doorway containing a 6-panelled door and a fanlight with radiating glazing bars. A slate pentice roof covers the doorway to the granary on the left.
