Description

The Coachman's House, built in 1711, is located approximately 20 meters east of Hudscott House. It features a brick facade in Flemish bond and stone rubble at the rear, topped with a gabled slate roof that has a brick ridge stack and a bell-cote on the front gable end. The building has a small rectangular plan with two rooms on each floor, a central stack heating the left-hand room, and a staircase positioned at the front of the stack. The entrance is at the rear, leading into the left-hand room.

The house is two storeys high and consists of three bays, arranged symmetrically. It retains its original fenestration, which includes two 24-paned hornless sash windows with thick glazing bars on each floor, flanking a blind window above a round-headed niche. A clockface, set diamond-wise in the gable, is dated 1711. The open-sided bellcote above is supported by timber uprights and features an ogee lead roof. The clock mechanism, made by Lewis Pridham, is also dated 1711 and remains in perfect working order.

The Coachman's House is an early and very well-preserved example of its type, facing Hudscott House and forming a group with the stable block and integral gatepiers, as well as flanking walls, all of which have brick fronts but stone rubble construction at the rear.
