Description

The stables with a loft above, located approximately 5 metres southwest of Acland Barton, date back to the 17th century and have undergone some alterations. The structure is built from stone rubble and cob, topped with a corrugated iron roof that features a half-hip at the left end and gable ends to the right. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys tall, with a loft situated above the stables.

On the front, there is a loft opening with a stone lintel to the left, which has been infilled. To the right end, there are a window opening and a doorway, both featuring cambered brick arches and brick jambs. An early 17th-century stone doorway is located towards the right end, showcasing a chamfered segmental arch and dressed stone jambs, although it has been partially infilled to create a window opening.

At the right end, there is a small slated lean-to that includes a reset stone ogee window with a pierced quatrefoil stone inset above it. The right gable end of the main range features a two-light timber mullion window. At the rear, there are doorways for both storeys within the same opening, with the loft door having a heavy timber chamfered surround. A stone lintel is present above a small window opening to the left.

Inside, the loft floor is supported by massive timber stop-chamfered beams. Some 19th-century stable fittings remain. The roof structure consists of five trusses with principals that have short curved feet resting on a continuous timber wall plate. There are mortice holes in the soffits for original collars that have since been replaced, along with three tiers of threaded purlins and a diagonally set ridge purlin.
