Description

The Landkey War Memorial is a war memorial built around 1919, located on Manor Road in Landkey. It is made of granite and features a tall patee cross with chamfered edges, which is a style commonly associated with medieval wayside and churchyard crosses in Cornwall and Devon. The cross stands on a rectangular block with shouldered corners, which bears inscriptions in metal letters. The east face commemorates the fallen of the First World War, while the north face honors those who died in the Second World War. The memorial is elevated on two octagonal steps made of the same granite and is surrounded on three sides by a low stone wall, with railings completing the enclosure on the west side.

This memorial was erected to honor the nine men from the parish who lost their lives in the First World War, with the names of four individuals who died in the Second World War added later. It is prominently situated at a fork in the road, facing east, in front of Landkey's Methodist Chapel. The Landkey War Memorial is designated as Grade II due to its historical significance as a reminder of the impact of world events on the local community, its striking design and craftsmanship, and its group value with the nearby Methodist Church.
