Description
Chelfham Viaduct is a viaduct that served the dismantled Lynton-Barnstaple railway, built between 1896 and 1897, designed by engineer F. W. Chanter. It is constructed of yellow brick with rock-faced plinths at the piers. The viaduct measures 400 feet long and stands 70 feet high, featuring eight tall arches with semicircular heads that spring from unmoulded impost bands. On the west side, there are two shallow pilasters flanking the four principal arches, while the east side has a single central pilaster, all adorned with unmoulded capitals made of eight oversailing brick courses. The construction utilized more than a quarter of a million bricks and cost approximately £6,500. The narrow gauge line was closed in 1935, and this viaduct is noted as the largest bridge structure on a narrow gauge line.
