Description

Hoe Cottage is an 18th-century cottage that has undergone 20th-century alterations and an extension. The exterior features painted rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatch roof that has a plain ridge and gable ends. There is a stone rubble stack with a tapered cap, which has been heightened in brick, located at the left gable end. A similar stack that was formerly at the right gable end is now enclosed by a 20th-century two-storey extension.

The original layout includes a room on each side of a through-passage, with a staircase running up the front wall of the left-hand room. The two-storey extension has a one-room plan with an additional staircase added at the right end. Each fireplace in the cottage features a bread oven, indicating that it may have once been divided into two separate occupations.

The cottage is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century styles, all being two-light casements with six panes per light. There is a reused old ledged plank door with cover strips.

Inside, the interior has been entirely remodelled in the 20th century, but the bread ovens in each fireplace have been retained. The roof structure dates from the late 18th or early 19th century and consists of six pegged trusses with principals made of light scantling and waney rafters.
