Description

This former school, now used for storage, is located approximately 3 meters south-east of Deason Cottages. Built in 1846, it features random stone rubble construction with rough stone dressings and a slate roof with gable ends. The building consists of a small rectangular single-cell schoolroom with a gable entry. It has single pointed arched windows on each side and at the south-east gable end, along with a semi-circular arched doorway that has a blind fanlight and a four-panelled door at the north-west end.

Above the gable and window, there is a stone plaque that reads: "1846 This Schoolroom was erected by I. Stevens of Warkleigh for the Education of the Poor Children of Warkleigh And the Neighbourhood. Subscribers T Burgess I Beer I Passmore." The school was established in the same year as the original National School in the parish, following a disagreement between the local non-conformist and Church of England congregations. It was used on Sundays by the Bible Christians, but the date it ceased to function as a school is unknown. After its educational use, it served various purposes, including as a shed for thatchers and a cobbler's shop, and it is currently utilized as an outhouse.
