Description
The Warkleigh War Memorial is a war memorial cross built in 1924. It is made from roughly-hewn Dartmoor grey granite and is located at a fork in the road that runs north-south between Chittlehamholt and Warkleigh.
The memorial features a plain, tapering Latin cross that stands on a small, square plinth. The main inscription is in raised lettering on a polished panel at the base of the cross shaft, which reads: ‘IN PROUD MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF WARKLEIGH / WHO GAVE / THEIR LIVES / IN THE / GREAT WAR / IN THE CAUSE / OF JUSTICE / AND FREEDOM / 1914–1919’. The names of eight individuals who fell during the First World War are listed in two columns of raised lettering on the front of the plinth. Below this, there is an additional inscription ‘1939–1945’, followed by two names.
